Every so often I meet people who not only think living a celibate life (remaining single to build up God’s Kingdom) is unnatural, but they almost feel like they have to “save me” from this “terrible” thing I’m walking into by joining the Salesians and studying to be a priest.
Sometimes the conversation goes more or [...]

What Will You Give Your Life For?

Most of the time we can float through life if we’re not careful. The more we become focused on ourselves and our own lives the quicker and easier it is to forget about others.
We (the novices) made a pilgrimage last week to the shrines of three American saints who offered their lives for others. We [...]

Life is good, and it is so simple when we remember why we are here.
I had the chance to speak with an amazing priest today. Thank God for him. He helped me to recover my focus on the Lord, regroup and simplify my life. Thank God for the great blessing of confession.
Here is some of [...]

Don Bosco had a lot of tough times in his life. I was recently reflecting on a time in the late 1840s where most of his older boys who were the leaders of the Oratory as well as many of the younger boys had abandoned him, being drawn away to Protestant youth gatherings because of [...]

It’s funny how the Lord speaks to us sometimes.
I was enjoying the beautiful view out my window this afternoon when I noticed one of our school kids ready to make the jump. My window looks down below on our large school jungle-gym with slides, a plastic rock climbing wall and little ins-and-outs to keep the [...]

Today was a great day!
In the morning after prayers, mass and breakfast, we traveled to NJ for a vocation weekend where some of the young men discerning a Salesian vocation were hanging out for a long weekend of talks, prayer, sports, fellowship and fun.
It was good to meet all the guys, to share an awesome [...]

I got some great advice today. My spiritual director helped me to realize something very simple. After making my confession he told me something I never thought he would say. He said “Sean, harden your heart..”
I thought for a second that I had misheard what he said and then he continued explaining that we [...]

Great Expecations

Beginning discernment with the Salesians in August almost two years ago I entered with great expectations. I thought in no time we would save all young people and lead them to Christ. With Jesus, St. John Bosco and Mary Help of Christians who could stand in our way, right? I also thought that [...]

So you may be thinking about trying out religious life. You may have worked up enough courage to finally say to yourself and the Lord, yeah I guess I would be willing to try it out…but how do you choose, there are so many religious orders and congregations which one is for you?
I think of [...]
